Music data analyzed by trained musicians.
Music models can generate notes. Understanding why they work is another matter. We commission theorists and musicians to create and analyze the music they learn from.
Music theory, with proof.
Music models still make errors any theory student would mark: parallel fifths in a chorale, chords labeled in the wrong key, cadences missed, meter misread, MIDI that drifts out of alignment with the score, or a generated piece that wanders without form. HUMXN commissions credential-checked music theorists, composers, arrangers and performers to produce harmonic analysis, voice-leading annotation, score and MIDI alignment and original works, labeled to a consistent scheme.
Recordings, scores and compositions are sourced from consenting creators who hold the rights, or created new for the request, with consent bound to each item. Audio is fingerprinted with acoustic fingerprints and checked for duplicates, human-origin checks read embedded metadata, and label provenance records who made and confirmed each label. A second musician reviews every item, and exclusive licences are available.
For musicians and theorists, this is paid, remote work that uses your ear and your analysis. You label harmony and form, align notation with audio, compose or arrange to a brief, and review a colleague's work, at a rate shown before you accept each job. Original work you create is licensed on the terms stated in the job. Approved work is paid automatically through Stripe.
Built to your specification.
Every engagement starts from a written spec and a pilot batch. These are the most common requests we source for music theory.
Harmonic analysis
Roman numeral and functional analysis with keys, modulations and cadences marked, aligned to scores and audio.
Voice-leading annotation
Part-writing labeled for errors and techniques, from chorales to jazz voicings, following a written scheme.
Score, MIDI and audio alignment
Notation aligned to MIDI and recorded performances at note or beat level, with timing and expression marked.
Form and structure labels
Sections, phrases, themes and formal types labeled across a piece, for models that need long-range structure.
Original compositions
New works and arrangements written to a brief, with stems, scores and MIDI, and consent bound to each item.
Musical judgments
Musicians compare and grade generated music for harmony, voice leading, form and stylistic fit, with rationales.
01Rights in music
Scraped music carries disputed rights. Consented sources, acoustic fingerprints and signed provenance keep each item clear.
02Analysis is interpretive
Theorists disagree on edge cases. A written scheme and second-musician review make labels consistent.
03Alignment drift
Small timing errors between score and audio compound over a piece. Expert alignment checks each section.

Music theory: asked often.
What music data can you deliver?
Harmonic and formal analysis, voice-leading annotation, score-MIDI-audio alignment, original compositions and arrangements with stems, and graded judgments of generated music. Requests are scoped by style, instrumentation and format, then matched to musicians verified in that area. A pilot batch confirms the labeling scheme before scaling.
Who owns the rights to the music?
Every recording, score and composition comes from a consenting creator who holds the rights, or is created new under a job whose licence terms are stated up front. Consent is bound to each item, audio is fingerprinted, and signed provenance travels with the data. Exclusive licences are available.
What qualifications do I need?
Most analysis jobs ask for a music degree with strong theory training. Composition and arrangement jobs weigh professional work and portfolio as much as degrees. We verify identity and credentials, may ask for a short, paid assessment, and only offer jobs that match your verified profile and styles.
How do I get paid?
Rates are set by field and task and are shown before you accept. Once a second musician approves your work, it is credited to your balance and paid automatically through Stripe after your identity and tax details are verified. Each job appears on an itemized ledger.
How much time is required?
There is no minimum commitment. Opportunities arrive when they match your verified skills, each with a stated scope and deadline, and you choose which to accept. The work is remote and fits around teaching, performing or composing, so you can take more on between seasons and less during a busy run.
Can we get exclusive rights to commissioned music?
Yes. Commissioned compositions, analyses and alignments can be licensed exclusively, with scope, term and exclusivity agreed in writing before work begins. Audio is delivered as WebDataset or Parquet and labels as JSONL or Croissant, with a signed receipt listing every item by ID and hash. Standing orders can extend a collection over time.
